Energy Communities connect: Warm Lunetten (NL) visits Balbriggan SEC (IE)

Crossover visit in Balbriggan in June 2025

The Lunetten district in Utrecht (NL) aims to become gas-free by 2036. To support this transition, the local citizen energy community Warm Lunetten is developing an electricity and heating plan, including the potential for a district heating network.

In June 2025, Warm Lunetten visited Balbriggan (IE), a coastal city in Fingal County to meet with the Balbriggan Sustainable Energy Community (SEC). Both groups shared experiences on the challenges and rewards of community-led energy projects. The Dutch delegates also toured the Balbriggan Decarbonising Zone, gaining insights into local climate action efforts.

The exchange highlighted a common reality: while contexts differ, communities across Europe face similar challenges and share the same determination to act. The visit left both groups inspired and motivated.
